The team was proud to present our results in the Walkern Katatdjin Phase 1 Community Forum.
Attendees at the Forum included representatives from First Peoples Rainbow Mob WA, Wungening Aboriginal Corporation, Yorgum Healing Services, Sexual Health Headquarters, WA AIDS Council, Edith Cowan University, Kulbardi Aboriginal Centre, and the Telethon Kids Institute.
After the feedback, we completed a workshop discussing whether the results, how this research needs to be shared and translated, and how services can improve their ability to support Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander LGBTQA+ young people.
We want to thank those who attended on the day for their incredible input and enthusiasm.
The Australian Professional Association for Trans Health (AusPATH) Perth conference ran from Thursday 24th October to Saturday 26th of October 2019, and involved presentations for health and medical professionals discussing current trans healthcare. Ashleigh chaired presentations on mental health of trans peoples and co-hosted a community panel discussion with Trans/Sistergirl Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander keynote speakers. Ashleigh had the unique and privileged opportunity to listen to the stories and experiences of Aunty Lillian Lampton, Aunty Vanessa Smith. Lisa Taylor and Simone Miller. Bep and Shakara attended the ‘Rainbow Serpent Family Learning: Health and Wellbeing Festival’ in Perth, Armadale on the 24th of October 2019.
Rainbow Serpent Family Learning, also known as Waakal Moort Kaadadjiny, is a group of health representatives from varying organisations who have come together to recognise, acknowledge and collaborate to raise awareness around suicide of Aboriginal People. This group ran the ‘Health and Wellbeing’ festival on the 24th of October 2019, where Aboriginal members of the community could engage with varying health services, alongside enjoying cultural dances, food and activities. Bep and Shakara attended the festival with a stall to promote the Walkern Katatdjin research study.

The Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Research Showcase took place in the South Australian Health and Medical Research Institute on the 27th and 28th February 2020. This event was a fantastic opportunity to hear about current Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health research and connect with other researchers.

It’s 30 years of Pride Western Australia! This year, PrideFEST runs from Saturday 2nd of November to Saturday 30th of November. PrideFEST theme for this year is "Reflect; love, heroes, community & identity”, to reflect on the development over the past 30 years in Western Australia. PrideFEST runs for the month of November, with art, culture and community events run all over WA. Bep and Shakara attended the Oxfam UWA seminar ‘LGBTQI+ Rights in Australia and Abroad’ on the 28th of August 2018. They heard from an array of incredible speakers chosen to present on the ongoing struggles LGBTQI+ people face in Australia and abroad, in addition to the current work to improve attitudes to LGBTQI+ people. In particular, they enjoyed hearing from Nita Jane, a Queer Yamatji Badimia woman founder of Disability Access to Suicide Prevention and Life Advocacy Australia (DASPLAA).
