Privacy Policy

Protecting your privacy is important to us. This policy explains how the Walkern Katatdjin project collects, uses, and safeguards the personal information you provide to us.

This policy may be amended from time to time.

Walkern Katadjin is bound by the Privacy Act 1988 (Cth), including the Australian Privacy Principles. We are committed to protecting personal information we hold on individuals.

This statement explains the types of personal information that we collect and use for the purposes of this study. It also provides some details about your privacy rights along with our general rights and obligations.

 

What is personal information?

Personal information means information or an opinion about an identified individual, or an individual who is reasonably identifiable:

  • Whether the information or opinion is true or not; and

  • Whether the information or opinion is recorded in a material form or not.

The types of personal information we collect may include your name, date of birth, location, contact information, Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander identity, and sexual and/or gender identity.

 

Whose personal information do we collect?

We will be collecting the contact information of anyone who signs up to participate in the study. This necessarily people who are: 14-25 years old, Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander, and LGBTQA+.

 

What will we do with your personal information?

This information will be used to compile a database of potential participants. Only research team members will have access to this database and it will be kept in a password protected file. We will not share this database with anyone for commercial purposes. The database will be deleted once the study is over.

We will use this information to determine eligibility to participate in the study, and a member of the researcher team may contact eligible participants using the contact information provided regarding participation in the study.

 

How do we collect your personal information?

When you sign up for the study, you will be prompted to enter your real name, email address or phone number, age, and location into a SurveyMonkey survey. SurveyMonkey's Privacy Policy is provided here:

Why do we collect your personal information?

We will collect your personal information to determine your eligibility to participate in the study and in order to contact you regarding participation.

Where we collect your personal information for a specific purpose not outlined above, we will provide you with a collection notice which explains the primary purpose and any related secondary purposes for which we are collecting your personal information.

 

What happens if you don’t provide all this information?

If you do not provide some or all of the personal information requested, you may not be able to participate in the study.

 

Using a pseudonym or engaging with us anonymously

Unfortunately, we cannot accept pseudonyms or anonymous engagement when signing up to participate. However, participants have the option or using a pseudonym during the research stage, and all participant information in all publications will be anonymised.

The only personal information collected on this website is that given voluntarily – your personal information will not be collected while you browse.

 

To whom do we disclose your personal information?

We do not share your information with any third parties unless we have your specific consent to do so.

 

Where is your personal information stored?

We take all reasonable steps to protect all of the personal information we hold from misuse, interference and loss, and from unauthorised access, modification or disclosure. Your personal information will be stored in a password protected file, and access will be restricted to research team members.

 

Access to your personal information

We will, upon request, and subject to applicable privacy laws, provide you with access to your personal information that is held by us. However, we request that you identify, as clearly as possible, the type(s) of information requested. We will deal with your request to provide access to your personal information within 30 days. Your rights to access personal information are not absolute and privacy laws dictate that we are not required to grant access in certain circumstances such as where:

  • Access would pose a serious threat to the life, safety or health of any individual or to public health or public safety

  • Access would have unreasonable impact on the privacy of other individuals

  • The request is frivolous or vexatious

  • Denying access is required or authorised by a law or a court or tribunal order

  • Access would be unlawful, or

  • Access may prejudice commercial negotiations, legal proceedings, enforcement activities or appropriate action being taken in respect of a suspected unlawful activity or serious misconduct.

If we refuse to grant you access to your personal information, we will provide you with reasons for that decision (unless it is unreasonable to do so) and the avenues available for you to complain about the refusal.

Due to the potentially sensitive nature of some of the information we hold, we require photo identification of the applicant. We will not provide the information of any person other than the applicant.

 

Updating your personal information

You may ask us to update, correct or delete the personal information we hold about you at any time. We will take reasonable steps to verify your identity before granting access or making any corrections to or deletion of your information. We also have obligations to take reasonable to steps to correct personal information we hold when we are satisfied that it is inaccurate, out of date, incomplete, irrelevant or misleading for the purpose for which it is held.
